Before you even start packing, there’s one thing you must get sorted: your travel documents. Missing or outdated paperwork can ruin a trip faster than a delayed flight.

Your Passport

A valid passport is non-negotiable. Most countries require it to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates and have a certain number of blank pages.

  • Take a photo of your passport and/or make copies to store in your suitcase.
  • This isn’t a valid ID for official purposes, but it’s a lifesaver if your passport gets lost.
  • Save the phone number of the nearest U.S. Embassy for emergencies.

ETIAS (For U.S. Citizens)

Starting in 2026, U.S. travelers will need an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) to enter most of Europe.

  • It’s basically a visa waiver program.
  • Easy to apply online. Don’t wait until the last minute!
  • The UK requires something similar. Read about that here.

Other Travel Documents

  • Check entry requirements for each country you plan to visit. Airlines and government sites are your best sources.
  • Keep your ID or passport with you at all times. Many countries require you to have a valid ID at all times. Your US driver’s license typically does’t count.
  • Remember: rules can change, so double-check before you leave.

Quick Tips

  • Make digital and physical backups of all documents.
  • Know how to contact the nearest U.S. Embassy in case of an emergency.
  • Check government websites for each country you’re visiting. Some require additional forms or information. It’s the same for most countries within the EU.
